The photographer is not simply the person who records the past, but the one who invents it.
—Susan Sontag
Everybody is an ongoing participatory artwork created in Sydney in 2001 by David Star with Julian Wolkenstein.
The project invites people to produce their own photographic portrait without direction, selection, editing or censorship. Participants are photographed individually and in the order they arrive. The resulting portraits form a public archive shaped collectively rather than authored traditionally by the photographer.
Part portrait series and part social sculpture, Everybody explores identity, self-representation and participation through photography.
The long-term ambition of the project is to produce Everybody in cities around the world, such as Everybody (Beijing), Everybody (London), Everybody (Hanoi), Everybody (Mexico City), Everybody (Paris), etc.
